It provides for the analysis of the coverage area of a specific television station (by contour), which can then be overlaid over Statistics Canada data, for the purpose of deriving household counts, and specific demographic information (such as language and income), for the station's off-air market. This data can and should be used in conjunction with cable carriage/penetration information. (See below.)

A typical question that one would pose of this data would be: "How many households can receive my channel [B contour] off-air?" "How many of these households also receive it through cable, or some other means?" "How many of the total households have only off-air access to my channel?"

This data also forms an integral part of EPG (Electronic Program Guide) services.
